New York Fashion Week Highlights

By Kenetta Bailey on 09/11/2014

At Maxus we are all about embracing change and creativity, so what better place for some inspiration than New York Fashion Week, showcasing wears for Spring 2015?! It is winding down and what a fun week of fashion it’s been. I love getting a head start on thinking about ‘what’s next’ for the upcoming season, so this week, I’ve been a student of myriad Instagram pages, Pinterest posts, runway videos, fashion trades, and more. Here’s what I found most interesting:

Models wearing Carolina Hererra’s gowns glided down the runway with such grace. The formal dresses were stunning, adorned with delicate digitized flowers, blending bold and soft colors in the most elegant of ways. For an event I’m attending in November, I’ve had my eye on similar gowns at Neiman Marcus -- more seasonally-appropriate in black and jewel-toned hues and at a more palatable price point.

Donna Karan’s collection was inspired by the place she calls home, New York.  With a chic yet busy, artistic collection of textured fabrics, bold colors and of course, a base of black, Donna’s dresses were somewhat atypical for her designs. Let’s just call them, ‘elegantly urban’.

I love hats, and they’re back! Stephen Jones, milliner, created exaggerated hats for Donna Karan’s runway show. They’re a crafted with a bit of whimsy; and, I’d be excited to break out a more understated version for the spring.

Two words describe Serena Williams’ Signature Statement Collection – trendy and cute. Animal prints, which never go out of style, and faux leather, which is big even this fall, anchor the collection. From leggings to vests (yes, vests are back, too), all of Serena’s affordable spring pieces will be available on HSN. Not luxury for sure, but Serena’s casual, timeless pieces add to any wardrobe. Couple her leopard print leggings with a great leather jacket and sexy ankle boots, and you’ve got a great outfit.

Victoria Beckham launched a sleek line of suits and dresses. The collection, in neutral tones and lots of linen fabric, features simple, clean lines and a strong nod to a military look. I hear Vogue editor, Anna Wintour, sat front-and-center at Victoria’s show. Impressive.

Diane von Furstenberg’s spring collection is called, Riviera. It’s sexy, sassy, and inspired by styles worn in the 1950s on the French Riviera. The colors are bright and the collection is simply beautiful. My absolute favorite of the week’s show. One of her dresses will be in my closet this upcoming Spring.
